What is Outdoor Orthodoxy?

Outdoor Orthodoxy is more than a retreat, hike, or camping trip—it’s a spiritual journey into communion with God, with one another, and with creation. Families are invited to rediscover the sacramental depth of everyday life through prayer, stillness, and wonder in the natural world.

Outdoor Orthodoxy offers a prayerful pause—an invitation to encounter God in His creation and to grow together as families in faith and attentiveness.

Creation as Revelation

“The heavens declare the glory of God.” (Psalm 19:1)

As Saint Maximus the Confessor taught, creation is the first incarnation—God’s self-revelation woven into the very fabric of the world. Saint Porphyrios even called nature “the secret Gospel.”

Through creation, the Creator is revealed. In nature, we learn to be attentive, present, and prayerful. Children grow in awe instead of anxiety. Families learn to behold beauty and draw nearer to Christ.

How it Works

Outdoor Orthodoxy creates opportunities for families to journey together through:

• Pilgrimage-inspired nature walks, hikes, and camping trips
• Family-friendly Liturgical services outdoors
• Simple naturalist education (topography, plants, ecosystems)
• Essential outdoor skills
• Reflection & storytelling moments
• Age-appropriate materials for children (5–12) and conversation guides for parents

The A.W.E. Framework

Our curriculum follows a three-fold path:

• Awe – responding to the beauty and grandeur of God’s creation
  
• Wonder – slowing down to notice, ask, and learn
  
• Experience – entering more deeply into the Mystery of Christ through worship and care for creation

This rhythm of awe, wonder, and experience helps shape families to live sacramentally and prayerfully in the world.

Who is it for?

This ministry is designed for children ages 5–12, but for its full impact to be realized, families must be involved. Parents and guardians play an essential role in helping children experience the rhythms of prayer, presence, and pilgrimage together.
